IN PICTURES: This is how our last JMS 50 events went over the weekend

Date: Thursday, 24 November 2022:

The first event kicked off with a media briefing, where Vice Chancellor of Rhodes University, Professor Sizwe Mabizela emphasized to the media the importance of these awards and the significance they have to journalists and those in the media industry as well as the role that all media players have to play in holding those in power to account.

Senior members of Rhodes University’s Communication and Marketing Division, along with those from the School of Journalism and media studies took a picture with the University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sizwe Mabizela and esteemed members of the media in Johannesburg, just moments before the main event.

Following that briefing, the School of JMS, Comms and Marketing teams as well as the VC then joined the invited guests in a lavish ceremony, where 8 alumni from the School of Journalism and Media Studies were honoured with the JMS50 awards for their outstanding contributions to media and journalism. These alumni are Deirdre Uren, Nick Grubb, Elna Schutz, David Mann, Lizeka Mda, David O’Sullivan, Paula Fray and James Oatway.

The University’s CFO, Kamlesh Riga, Dr Michele Ruiters, who is the President of Rhodes University’s Convocation and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation were among those in attendance, who also gave speeches at this prestigious event. The event MC was another Rhodes Alumni, Masego Khutsoane, who through her warm presence and storytelling, kept audiences entertained throughout the ceremony.

Congratulations to each one of the eight alumni that were awarded for their excellence in their respective careers and we thank them for flying the University flag higher and higher.

Date: Friday, 25 November 2022:

On the second day of honouring our award-winning alumni, we decided to do things a bit different the alumni awards took place during the day, as opposed to the evening, as was with the previous event. Before all that could happen, however, Professor Sizwe Mabizela embarked on a media visit to SABC 2’s Morning Live set, where he spoke about the awards and their significance.

At this event, nine JMS alumni were awarded with the JMS 50 awards and these awardees were Dr Admire Mare, Dr Kammy Naidoo, Stephen Grootes and Michael Markovitz. Five alumni were awarded in absentia at this event: Peter Bruce, Kammy Naidoo, Lindile Mpanza, Marion Sparg and Steyn Speed.
